March 27
Mk. 14:22-26 / Lk. 22:14-20
When I hear a phrase such as “I have earnestly desired...” my mind goes to
the childlike eager anticipation of the gifts and fun of Christmas. I’m talking
about the excitement that came from knowing gifts were coming with my
name on them. I couldn’t wait!
Jesus says He earnestly desired to eat this Passover meal with the disciples,
“before He suffers”. He was eager to do this knowing what was coming. If I
knew the suffering I was about to endure, I don’t think I would be eager for
the time to come that would mark the initiation of said suffering. But Jesus
did. Jesus was eager to share the moment with His closest followers . This
supper would open their eyes to the meaning and significance of what was
about to happen. His relationship with them took center stage, and set the
stage for us to continue honoring His sacrifice by remembering Him, together,
around the table, in relationship with Him and one another.
Consider sharing a communion celebration with your family and/or friends
tonight. Take time to share what means the most to you as you reflect on
Jesus’ initiation of Communion. Reflect on how you earnestly anticipate time
spent with Jesus: if that kind of excitement isn’t part of your routine, what
could you do to make space for Kingly anticipation.
