John 13: 1-17

.
Jesus is truly the master teacher. Of His myriad incredible teaching
moments, today’s reading is one that tugs at my heart because of Jesus’
humility and Peter’s human response. Jesus wanted the disciples to see
Christ-like humility on full display because it is a Kingdom value that is
not natural to humanity. We humans tend to think of ourselves first and
Jesus showed us a better way.

Peter, not intending any disrespect (in my opinion), first resists Jesus’
offer to to wash his feet. He knows His Lord is the true Messiah and
King and feels unworthy to be served by his King. I suspect we can all
relate. Then, after being confronted by Jesus for the attitude, Peter goes
to the other extreme and says wash all of me. Let’s be honest, that just
sounds awkward. But Peter so afraid to miss out on what Jesus is
offering overdoes his response. Again, we can certainly do the same.
Jesus does not condemn Peter’s enthusiasm, He teaches we must be
ready to serve, and in so doing, lead by example. Wow, what a Savior
Jesus is!

In what ways will you model Jesus’ style servant leadership in your
home, at work, at church, and in your community?
